Touch is one of the most popular summer sports in New Zealand, from school grades to social competitions after work. It’s quick to learn and easy to love, but organising a team still takes work.
What makes touch different to organise
Rolling subs. Players come on and off constantly, so there’s no fixed lineup — but fair time still matters.
Mixed teams. Many grades require a minimum number of each gender on the field, which adds a constraint when players drop out.
Big squads, busy people. Social teams in particular have players juggling work and family, and availability changes weekly.
Many teams at once. Schools often enter several touch teams in the same competition.

How a touch rugby team app helps
Availability with the right mix. See who’s in and check you’ll meet your grade’s gender requirements before game night.
Fair time. Even with rolling subs, Squaddie helps plan a fair spread of time across the squad.
Fixtures in one place. Field numbers and start times, visible to the whole team.
School-wide view. Schools running multiple touch teams can see them all together, and future tools for building whole rounds of fixtures are on Squaddie’s roadmap.

Quick tips for touch coaches
- Set a midweek availability deadline and stick to it.
- Keep a short list of fill-ins for when you’re short.
- Use trainings for defensive line speed and communication — they win more games than flashy attack.
- Keep it social. For many players, that’s the whole point.
