How do I rotate players fairly in youth soccer?

Select your match format (5v5, 7v7, 9v9, 11v11), set period lengths, and enter your squad. The generator calculates fair position rotations and equal playing time across all players.

How to use this rotation generator

  1. Add players and set availability. Tick must play for players needing starting time.
  2. Select your match format (5v5, 7v7, 9v9, or 11v11) and position structure.
  3. Set match duration and period length (halves, quarters, or thirds).
  4. Generate rotation plan and fine-tune player assignments before kickoff.

How the half maths works

The number of on-pitch slots in a match is fixed: positions × halfs. Sharing them between your squad is simple division, and it is what decides whether an even split is even possible.

Soccer — 7 a side — 2-3-1 over 4 halfs (28 slots)
Squad sizeHalfs eachEven split?
7 players4Yes — identical for everyone
9 players3 or 4No — 1 player gets one extra
10 players2 or 3No — 8 players get one extra
12 players2 or 3No — 4 players get one extra
14 players2Yes — identical for everyone

This is why a rotation that looks unfair often is not. With 7 positions there is no arrangement that gives an awkward squad size identical time — the best any coach can do is keep the gap to a single half, and rotate who carries it from week to week.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I rotate players in soccer?

Divide the match into equal periods (halves or quarters) and rotate subs at each break. Keep a running tally of minutes played so every child gets a turn.

How do I make fair soccer substitutions?

Plan substitution intervals before kickoff using a rotation calculator so no single player sits out multiple consecutive periods.

How can I track soccer playing time?

Use our Soccer Playing Time Tracker or the Squaddie app to log player minutes per match and view season totals.

How many substitutes should I use?

In youth soccer, 3 to 5 substitutes work best for frequent rotations without disrupting match flow.

Can Squaddie create rotations automatically?

Yes. Squaddie automatically generates equal-minute rotations and position assignments based on your squad size and match format.

One game sorted. Now do the season.

Squaddie remembers who has played what, so every week's rotation starts from what actually happened last week — not from a blank page.
