School Sport NZ Awards: Honouring the Coaches and Leaders Behind Secondary School Sport

Secondary school sports coaches and coordinators celebrated for their service to school sport in New Zealand

Secondary school sport in Aotearoa New Zealand is extraordinary in its scale and reach. Every week across terms and tournament cycles, tens of thousands of rangatahi pull on their school colours across netball courts, rugby pitches, basketball arenas, hockey turfs, football fields and rowing lakes.

Yet behind every team list, early morning training van, tournament travel itinerary and Saturday morning sideline whistle stands someone giving their time for free.

Secondary school sport does not run on multi-million dollar budgets — it runs on dedicated teachers in charge of sport, volunteer parent coaches, community leaders and tireless school sports coordinators.

The School Sport NZ Awards, presented by School Sport New Zealand (the New Zealand Secondary Schools Sports Council), provide a national platform to celebrate these exceptional individuals and forward-thinking initiatives.

You can learn more about the awards, nomination timelines and eligibility directly through the official School Sport NZ Awards programme.

The Three School Sport NZ Award Categories

The School Sport NZ Awards honour significant contributions across three key categories, recognising both long-term dedication and modern, inclusive initiatives that shape the future of secondary school sport.

1. Service to School Sport Award

The Service to School Sport Award is presented to individuals who have made exceptional, sustained contributions to secondary school sport.

In many schools, there is a teacher or volunteer coach who has quietly run the junior basketball programme for over a decade, managed the winter hockey equipment shed year after year, or given up dozens of weekends to referee and umpire. This award recognises those whose enduring service ensures students continue to have positive sporting experiences.

2. Champion of School Sport Award

The Champion of School Sport Award honours leaders who have been actively involved in secondary school sport for more than 15 years.

This category recognises individuals whose influence extends beyond a single school gate — leaders who have shaped regional sports associations, contributed to national tournament committees, mentored generations of incoming coaches, or advocated tirelessly for the value of physical activity in secondary education.

3. Innovation in School Sport Award

Secondary school sport must continually adapt to changing student needs, diverse skill levels and modern lifestyles.

The Innovation in School Sport Award celebrates schools, organisations and coordinators who design creative initiatives that remove barriers to participation. Whether it is introducing flexible multi-sport leagues, developing student coach leadership programmes, or creating inclusive recreational opportunities for students who would otherwise miss out on school sport, this award champions fresh thinking.

Who Deserves Recognition in Your School Community?

If you work or volunteer in secondary school sport, you almost certainly know someone who deserves recognition:

  • The volunteer coach who turns up in the rain every Tuesday and Thursday, creates a positive environment where every player feels valued, and keeps kids coming back to sport season after season.
  • The teacher in charge who spends lunchtimes sorting gear, chasing parent permissions, and arranging transport so teams can travel to regional fixtures.
  • The sports coordinator managing 30 teams across 10 codes, balancing gym rosters, handling tournament registrations, and ensuring fair play policies are upheld school-wide.
  • The innovators piloting non-traditional formats, student-led officiating programmes, or lunchtime social competitions that get disengaged teens active.

How to Nominate

School Sport NZ accepts nominations from school principals, sports coordinators, regional sports directors and sporting bodies. Nominations typically require a summary of the nominee’s service or project, accompanied by supporting letters of endorsement and evidence of their positive community impact.
