Positions

Ice hockey has 6 named positions. Junior and small-sided formats use fewer of them, which is worth checking before you plan a rotation — the number on the rink is what sets how playing time divides up.
  • Goaltender (G) — Protects the net. Uses specialised leg pads, catching glove, blocker, and goalie stick to stop shots.
  • Center (C) — Takes faceoffs, covers the full 200 feet of the ice, leads offensive playmaking and supports defence down low.
  • Left Wing (LW) — Plays on the left attacking flank. Forchecks, supports board battles, and crashes the net for scoring rebounds.
  • Right Wing (RW) — Plays on the right attacking flank. Provides passing width, outside shooting, and backchecking support.

See all 6 ice hockey positions explained, including where each one is allowed to go and whether junior players should specialise.
