Coaching School and Club Hockey in NZ: Rolling Subs, Formations and Turf Time

School field hockey players competing on a water turf

Field hockey on water or sand turf is one of the fastest team sports on the New Zealand school calendar. From midweek evening turf fixtures under lights to big Winter Tournament Week events like Rankin Cup, Federation Cup, India Shield and Marie Fry Trophy, hockey coaches have to manage high running loads and frequent rolling substitutions.

Without a clear plan, the bench gets messy, midfielders stay on too long, and half the squad ends up asking when they’re going back on.

1. Organise your turf formation clearly

Whether your grade plays full 11-a-side hockey or small-sided development formats, players perform best when they can see their structure before stepping onto the turf.

  • Visual turf lineups: Map out your strikers, inner/wide midfielders, halfbacks, fullbacks and goalkeeper so every player knows their role and their sub partner.
  • Positional preferences: Save each player’s primary and secondary lines (attack, midfield, defence, GK) so you never accidentally leave yourself short at the back.

2. Keep rolling substitutions fair across four quarters

Because hockey allows rolling substitutions, it is easy for a 5-minute breather to accidentally turn into a 15-minute bench stint while play flows from end to end.

Planning your quarter rotations and sub lines ahead of push-back means:

  • Midfielders and forwards rotate in crisp bursts to keep press intensity high.
  • Every player gets fair turf time across the match and across the season.
  • During five-day tournaments, no player carries an unsafe workload into playoff days.

3. Sort turf availability early

School and club hockey fixtures often land on early Saturday mornings or late weeknight turf slots across town. Having parents mark player availability in the app early in the week tells you immediately whether you have a full bench of 16 or need to call up cover.
